Dr. Calvin R. Edwards

Professor and Chair of Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies

A 25-year veteran of federal and municipal corrections, Dr. Edwards holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Elmhurst College, a Master of Social Work from Washington University, and a Master of Public Administration and Doctor of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. He has served as a warden in the Federal Bureau of Prisons and as executive deputy director and interim director of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections. During his distinguished career, Dr. Edwards received numerous awards and accolades for his leadership, including the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive given by the President of the United States. Dr. Edwards has been teaching college courses in criminal and social justice for eight years, and he joined the Lewis University faculty in 2006.

Dr. Lynn A. Tovar

Associate Professor of Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies

Another 25-year veteran of public service in the law enforcement community, Dr. Tovar began her career as a street patrol officer and rose to the rank of commander with the Elk Grove Village Police Department near Chicago, IL. She holds both a master's and doctoral degree in Adult Continuing Education with a focus on human resource development from Northern Illinois University and has traveled the world to speak and educate about emerging law enforcement trends and topics. In addition to her teaching duties at Lewis University in the areas of juvenile justice, domestic violence and leadership, Dr. Tovar continues to consult with police departments and other public safety agencies on matters of criminal and social justice, human resource development, leadership education and vicarious traumatization of first responders. Dr. Tovar recently attended the fourth FBI symposium on the Beyond Survival Toward Officer Wellness (BeSTOW) project, which provides training and resources to employees to assist them in developing their own emotional-spiritual wellness practices.
