Below are a number of frequently asked questions about the online Master of Science in Data Science program at Lewis University. If you have a question that is not listed below, call (866) 967-7046 to speak with an admissions counselor.
I am very interested in the Data Science program, but I do not have a strong background in math. Can I still apply?
Yes. You should have an aptitude for math and not be wary of taking math courses. However, through the introductory courses to the degree (13-510, 13-511 and 13-512), you will gain the math knowledge and skills you need to function as a data scientist.
Can the courses completed as part of the Certification program count toward any other degree programs at Lewis University?
Not currently. However, we are working on a Master of Science in Computer Science, and the Math/Computer Science courses of the Certificate program will count toward that degree.
Which programming languages will be used in each course?
Some programming exercises will be done in a mathematical programming language, such as Matlab and R. Others will be written in more traditional computer programming languages, such as Java, C++, and Python. Generally, those assignments will not prescribe a particular language to use, so a student may use the language with which he or she is comfortable.
Do I need to take the GRE or GMAT to apply? If so, what scores will be accepted?
No, you do not need to take the GRE or GMAT to apply.
How many courses should I plan to take each semester?
Most students will want to take two to three courses per semester. One or two per each eight-week term is probably the most comfortable option.
Are international students accepted?
Are current Lewis students able to apply?
Yes. In fact, we will be creating a fast-track program for current Computer Science students to complete the M.S. Data Science degree in a reduced amount of time.
How quickly can I complete this degree program?
Most students will complete the degree program in 18 months to two years.
Does the School offer career placement assistance for graduates?
Yes. Lewis University's Office of Career Services does offer opportunities to help students find employment in their chosen discipline.
What are you looking for in the statement of purpose?
We are looking for an explanation of why the student wishes to pursue a degree in Data Science as well as some indication that his or her prior academic and/or work experience suggests a reasonable chance of success in the program.
