Two Credentials – One Program

The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the only globally recognized, independent credentialing program for coach practitioners. This accreditation is awarded to masterful, integral and dedicated professionals that acquire a rigorous education, experience requirements, and an understanding of the coaching competencies through a program like Lewis’ Professional and Executive Coaching concentration. Just 9 months into the program, or after completing the four coaching courses, students are prepared to sit for ICF’s Coach Knowledge Assessment (CKA).4

Lewis’ online M.A. in Organizational Leadership, Professional and Executive Coaching concentration is an Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP). By this, ICF recognizes this program as all-inclusive, providing all training hours needed for credentialing.3

Students will also receive experience, mentorship, peer practice, and upskilling opportunities to enhance their knowledge in coaching.

Additionally, students can pursue the Board Certified Coach (BCC) credential in this program. This is a mark of distinction for those who have achieved specific coaching competency standards established by Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) and subject matter experts.5 Not only are students prepared to pursue this credential, but all of our coaching faculty hold this credential as well, ensuring industry-relevant information is being taught and has been practiced in the real world.

ICF Certification Process

Upon completion of the four coaching courses needed to complete the concentration, you will also satisfy the following specifications to apply for ICF's Coach Knowledge Assessment:

  • All coach training hour requirements (125 hours)
  • All required mentor coaching and coaching supervision

A Curriculum Creating Leaders

The program's faculty members will instill within you an advanced understanding of the executive coaching tools and strategies, helping you transform others into effective leaders like yourself. Coursework within the program begins with the basics of professional executive coaching, progressing to more complex topics, such as methodologies. Upon completion of the program, you'll be prepared to:

Professional vs. Executive Coaching

Professional Coaching6

  • Pursuing professional coaching prepares you for roles in coaching specialties including life coaching. Life coaches create plans with customized objectives and activities for achieving their client's goals.
  • They can work as independent consultants and contractors for businesses or pursue the health and education sectors with clients in residential care and treatment facilities.
  • They run regular coaching sessions and have occasional check-in sessions in between.

Executive Coaching7

  • Executive coaches lead their practice by establishing a sound coaching philosophy and designing a coaching methodology and process that helps inform them if they match well with a client, how to identify issues/challenges/problems to solve/improve/enhance their client, and align coaching philosophy with coaching framework.
  • They help their clients achieve results by creating behavior change and developing the skills, thinking, and competencies necessary for success by following a coaching framework.
  • They run regular coaching sessions and have occasional check-in sessions for clients working in business fields.

Additional Graduate Options

In addition to the concentration, Lewis also offers an online Professional and Executive Coaching certificate2, which is an Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP)3 through the International Coach Federation (ICF). This means that the certificate courses will meet all required coach training hours for students to become certified coaches through the ICF. Lewis University does not grant this ICF certification, but the Lewis University program prepares students to be eligible to attain it.

This 18-hour certificate program is an alternative to the complete Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership for students looking to build skills at coaching organizational leaders. Students who earn the certificate in Professional and Executive Coaching will understand the core coaching competencies while applying coaching models and techniques.
