Professor and Department Chair of the Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies Department
Dr. Calvin Edwards is currently the Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies at Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois, Master of Social Work degree from Washington University, Saint Louis, Missouri, and Master's and Doctoral degrees in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Edwards completed a 23 year career with the United States Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. During his career with the Bureau of Prisons, Dr. Edwards held numerous positions of increasing responsibilities including Warden at four federal prisons and Regional Director in three of the six regions within the Bureau of Prisons. Dr. Edwards also served as an Assistant Director of the Bureau of Prisons in Washington, DC. Following his retirement from the Bureau of Prisons, he served as the Executive Deputy Director and Interim Director of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections. Dr. Edwards has also worked with several private correctional organizations.
During his career with the federal government, Dr. Edwards was promoted into the Senior Executive Service and received numerous awards from Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice including the Bureau's Distinguished Service Medal. Additionally, he was awarded the Rank of Meritorious Executive from the President of the United States.
Prior to joining the faculty at Lewis University in 2004, Dr. Edwards was a faculty member at Ferris State University, Big Rapids Michigan and Mount Aloysius College, Cresson, Pennsylvania where he served as the Chairman of the Criminology Department.
Dr. Edwards has consulted with criminal justice organizations and published journal articles on Public Management and Corrections. He has also been a presenter at numerous professional conferences.
